The pieces attributed to Franklin were originally for a string quartet comprised of 3 violins plus cello, each tuned differently and to be played on open strings (!), and, as Dorati notes, in 1778 Franklin (the inventor of the glass harmonica) and Mozart were both in Paris at the same time. Since Dorati’s arrangement of the Mozart’s Adagio for glass harmonica from 1791 was not listed in the printed program he announced it from the Northrop stage.
